Project description

Microsoft Customer Experience & Success Business Intelligence (CE&S BI) provides enterprise clients with a centralized platform for documentation, reporting, and data insights. As part of a Purdue UX Experience Studio collaboration, our team partnered with Microsoft to redesign the CE&S BI Docs website and the CE&S BI Hub to improve usability, content discoverability, and visual consistency across their ecosystem.

The goal was to create a scalable, accessible experience that supports both first-time and experienced users while aligning with Microsoft’s design and brand standards.

Challenge

The existing CE&S BI Docs and Hub experiences were difficult to navigate and heavily text-driven. Users struggled to find key information, understand services, and access reports efficiently due to inconsistent navigation, unclear information hierarchy, and limited visual guidance.

Ways of working

We followed a research-driven, iterative UX process, working closely with Microsoft stakeholders to validate decisions at each stage. Design decisions were informed by usability principles, real user behavior, and technical constraints to ensure feasible handoff and long-term scalability.

Process

This category details the step-by-step approach taken during the project, including research, planning, design, development, testing, and optimization phases.

Research & Evaluation

Conducted desk research, heuristic evaluations, cognitive walkthroughs, and contextual analysis to identify usability issues and industry best practices. Collaborated with Microsoft subject matter experts to understand brand constraints, accessibility requirements, and platform goals.

Information Architecture & Strategy

Redefined site maps and navigation structures to reduce redundancy, clarify user pathways, and improve discoverability. Content was reorganized to better match user mental models and prioritize high-impact actions.

Design & Prototyping

Created high-fidelity wireframes for the CE&S BI Docs website and mid-fidelity designs for the Hub. Iterated on layouts, components, and interactions through usability testing, focusing on clarity, scrolling behavior, and task efficiency.

Design System & Handoff

Developed a reusable design system aligned with Microsoft standards, including components, typography, color tokens, and accessibility guidelines. Delivered Figma prototypes and HTML/CSS assets to support developer implementation.

Solution

The redesigned experience delivers a more intuitive, cohesive, and scalable platform for Microsoft CE&S BI users.

Improved Discoverability

Clear navigation, structured layouts, and visual hierarchy make documentation, services, and reports easier to find and understand.

Streamlined Navigation

Simplified pathways, consistent global navigation, and prioritized content reduce cognitive load and improve task completion.

Scalable Design System

A unified design system ensures visual consistency across Docs and Hub while supporting future growth and development.

Results

Here, the outcomes and early impact of the project are highlighted, including stakeholder feedback and adoption into active development.

Stakeholder Adoption

The redesigned CE&S BI Docs and Hub experiences were well received by Microsoft stakeholders and approved for immediate implementation.

In Progress Implementation

Designs were handed off to engineering and are currently in development, with components and layouts actively being built and integrated into the live platforms.

Future Impact

While quantitative user metrics are not yet available, the redesign establishes a strong foundation for improved usability, scalability, and long-term platform growth as implementation continues.
